Dr. George Oetinger III

Obituary Date: Tuesday, December 12, 2017

Dr. George Oetinger, III, 82, passed away at Northeast Georgia Medical Center on December 12. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, his daughter and his brother. George was preceded in death by his father, his mother and one brother.

Dr. Oetinger came from a military funeral and carried on with the vagabond lifestyle. He did a stint in the Army, but chose to pursue education as a career. He attended Pembroke State College, University of Alabama, University of Colorado and Mississippi State University where he earned his Master’s Degree and Doctorate Degree. At Mississippi State University, he found his niche in Sociology.

Over the years, he taught at Chemawa Indian School Mississippi State University, Idaho State University, West Georgia College, Northern Arizona University, Navajo Community College, Dine Community College and Gainesville State College. He retired from Gainesville State College and remained in the Gainesville area. His favorite subject to teach was “Introduction to Sociology”. He used applied Sociology when he taught at the Navajo Police Academy and when he worked for the state of Georgia Governor’s Coordinating Counsel.

George had a unique perspective, jovial spirit and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He touched many lives and will be missed by his family, is colleagues, former students and friends near and far away.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
