Mr. Charlie Self, age 74, of Dahlonega, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018.
Charlie was born in Suches on October 7, 1943 to the late George and Lillie Towe Self. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Alvin Self and granddaughter Emily Gibson. Charlie loved his work as a master carpenter. His work ethic and ability to remodel will always be cherished by his family.
Charlie loved to watch Nascar Racing. He enjoyed auto racing in his younger years and held a track record for many years at Detroit Motor Speedway. Charlie set a record at Motor City Dragway on April 26, 1970 and then broke his own record on the same track on September 20, 1970.
Charlie loved to help people. Whether it was a friend, a family member, or a stranger he was always ready to extend his hand. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren and they affectionately called him “Pa”. Charlie was a member of Harmony Church of God and The Torch of Dahlonega Church of God.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Susie Self, Dahlonega; son and daughter in law Everett and Wanda Self, Dahlonega; daughter Renee Hyatt, Dahlonega; grandchildren Daniel Self, Melissa and Jonathan Brady, Dustin and Diadra Rice, Celia Rice, and CJ Rice; great grandchildren Kaylen Rice, Brelynn Rice, Peyton Rice, and Reighlan Brady; sister and brother in law Dorothy and Albert Parison, Dahlonega; sister Lena Ash, Dahlonega; brother and sister in law Ted and Connie Self, Dahlonega; sister in law Faye Self; sister Georgia Mae Spradley, Dahlonega; brother Jerry Self, Clermont; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 AM Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the chapel of Banister Funeral Home. Reverend David Masters will officiate. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM Friday at the funeral home.
