Peter Allen Evans

Obituary Date: Friday, January 19, 2018

Peter Allen Evans of Dahlonega, Georgia, died on January 19, 2018.  Pete retired in 2002 and devoted himself to the things he loved most in his life: his family, faith, and service.  With children and grandchildren nearby, Pete took special pleasure in family meals, holidays, and keeping track of everyone. His sweet spirit gave him an endearing ability to make his family smile and his over-the-top humor was legendary especially among his grandchildren.  Petededicated his life to the church and particularly those missions and ministries that reached out to the poor and disadvantaged.  Over his lifetime, he was a member of a number of different congregations and in each one, provided leadership founded in God’s grace and love.  Pete also enjoyed membership in the Dahlonega Lions Club and undertook various service projects locally and regionally with a wide circle of good friends.

Pete was born on June 7, 1937, in Youngstown, OH.  He grew up in a nearby town, Poland, where he first met his beloved wife of 58 years, Gail, in pre-school..  The love and unconditional commitment that characterized their marriage created a standard first for their children and, in recent years, for grandchildren as several began to form lifelong relationships.  Pete’s successful career as a Sales Executive with RiegelTextiles, and later Dan River, gave the Evans family an opportunity to live in nearly every region of the United States with Manhattan serving as home base for three different stints.  Business partners liked and trusted Pete without exception and their faith in him, together with his deep expertise in the industry, meant that he was often assigned to the most critical and challenging accounts.  He took special pleasure in winning the confidence of his customers as well as his colleagues no matter their position or title.  For all of his business accomplishments, he always knew that his true measure would be as a husband, father, and man of faith and in each of these roles he was exceptional.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Dorothy Evans.  He is survived  by his wife, Gail, brother and sister-in-law Richard and Joida Evans, children Doug and Teri Evans, Keith and Emilie Evans, and Amy and Todd Lee, and six grandchildren.  A service celebrating Pete’s life will be held on Friday, January 26, at 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, East Enota Drive NE, Gainesville GA, 30501.  A reception will follow the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Pete’s favorite ministry, the First Presbyterian Church Mission Fund.
