James K Strickland

James K Strickland

James K. was born June 10th, 1937 at his family home in Merriweather County, Georgia.  He graduated high school in 1955 and attended Berry College where he received Bachelor’s degrees in both math and science.  Following graduation from Berry College, James K. enlisted in the United States Army where he served from 1961 to 1964.  After serving in Korea, James K. returned to Fort Meade, Maryland and was employed by the National Security Agency.  In 1964 he left Maryland to return to Newnan, Georgia and began civilian life as a high school teacher of math and a coach of the basketball team.  In 1965 he began a career in the United States Department of the Treasury as a Special Agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.  Special Agent Strickland retired from the Bureau in 1988.  In 1989 James K. began a second law enforcement career with the United States Marshals Service representing the Northern District of Georgia.  Mr. Strickland served as a Freemason of the Grand Lodge of Georgia through Chapter 219 in Gainesville, Georgia.  He was an avid bowler and enjoyed the sport for 30 years.  He also enjoyed teaching the sport to young people and coached a junior league for 5 years.  James K. Strickland is survived by his wife Gwendolyn and his children Allene and James Lee.  He is also survived by his brother Luther, his grandchildren Colton and Ethan Phillips, Kaylee Strickland, and Leilani Adams and his nephew Henry “Hank” Strickland.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jimmy V foundation for cancer research.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 7:00pm in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Anglin officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
