Dr. James Charles McCain

Obituary Date: Sunday, January 7, 2018

Dr. James Charles McCain, devoted husband, beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather of Dacula, GA passed away Jan. 7, 2018 at the age of 80. He was born in LaGrange, GA on May 6, 1937 to parents Olin and Myrtle McCain. He graduated from Handley H. S. and earned BA and BS degrees from Jacksonville St. Univ., AL. He earned a Master’s in Religious Educ. from Southwestern Bapt. Theol. Seminary, TX, a Master’s in Psychology and a Ph. D. in Higher Ed. Admin. from the Univ. of AL.  He served as a second lieutenant in the army prior to surrendering to the ministry.

Charles worked as an administrator at Jefferson St. Comm. College for 25 years, and taught religion classes at the college. After retiring from college admin., Charles served as Min. of Education and Church Administrator at Westwood Bapt. Church and FBC Trussville in the B’ham. area, and FBC Villa Rica, GA. He taught church admin. Classes at the New Orleans Bapt. Seminary Extension. Early in his career Charles served as Min. of Education at Powderly Bapt. Church, B’ham.

After retirement, Charles was a devoted Sunday school and men’s bible study teacher at Hebron Bapt. Church, Dacula, GA. He also served as a volunteer/teacher with the Barnabas Prison Ministry. He loved to travel, having visited all seven continents, and was a Certified Master Gardener with a love for creating beautiful landscape environments. But mostly, Charles loved Jesus. He loved his family. And he loved the local church. That love for the church was evidenced by his many domestic and international mission trips, building new churches. Throughout his life he was an encourager and mentor to many people who benefited from his counsel and wisdom. His diligent service, unwavering support, and Christ-like example earned the respect of all who knew him.

Charles is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Maude (Clark) McCain; his sister Nancy Newsome of Roanoke, AL; his sons Jon McCain (Alyson) of Baton Rouge, LA; Mark McCain (Sheila) of Atlanta, GA. He was the proud grandfather to Christy Cockfield (Nathan), Kelly Holder (Hudson), Lindsey McCain, Matthew Del Ray, Jacob McCain, and Ian McCain. He was the great-grandfather of Anna Claire & Emily Cockfield and Macey Holder. He is also survived by brother and sister in-law Jack and Becky Clark, Talladega, AL; sister in-law Frances McCain, LaGrange, GA, and other nephews and nieces.  He is pre-deceased by his parents, his brothers Billy Fred and Huey McCain, and his sister Grace Holladay.

A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Hebron Bapt. Church, Tuesday January 16. Visitation will be at 12:00 and the service at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Seasons Hospice Foundation or The National Parkinson’s Foundation.
