Barbara Hensley Lowe

Obituary Date: Tuesday, December 5, 2017

Mrs. Barbara Hensley Lowe, age 77, of Dahlonega, Georgia passed away Tuesday December 5, 2017 after an extended illness.

Mrs. Lowe was born and raised in LaFayette, Georgia and lived most of her life in Cobb County.  She was born on October 10, 1940, to the late Mr. Walter A. Hensley and Mrs. Bertha White Hensley.  She was also preceded in death by her husband John E. Lowe, infant daughter Cynthia Renee Lowe, teenage son William Scott Lowe, and her brother James R. Hensley.

Mrs. Lowe was a 1958 graduate of LaFayette High School.  She attended North Georgia College and finished there in 1962 with her MRS.   Mrs. Lowe and her husband went on to have four children and lived most of their life in Cobb County.  In 2001,  Mrs. Lowe retired from the Cobb County School System.  In her more than 20 years of service,  she spent most of her time in the Central Office working with the Special Education Department.  During her retirement she was able to sail the Caribbean, visit Europe and travel to the Holy Lands with her beloved pastor the Rev. Johnny Hunt.

Mrs. Lowe was a devout follower of Christ and longtime member of First Baptist Church Woodstock where she sang in the choir and participated in the annual Christmas Pageant.  She loved to sing and socialize with the Joyful Women, her ladies Sunday School class.  They grew to love each other as sisters in Christ,  and remember her as someone who overcame difficult circumstances without ever harboring any bitterness.  She was just a sweet lady and caring friend using her experience with hardships to minister to others.

Survivors include her daughter Dr. Susan Sockwell, and son-in-law Dr. Dean Sockwell, Dahlonega;  daughter Ms. Elizabeth Berg, Marietta;  grandchildren  Zachary Kirkman and Ciara Berg, Marietta; Mackenzie Sockwell, Johnny Sockwell and Noah Sockwell, Dahlonega;  sister Ms. Jo Hensley and brother Mr. Harold Hensley and Mrs. Frances Hensley, LaFayette; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Lowe was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will always be adored by her family.  The verse she leaves us with is from Proverbs 3:5-6,  "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."  She lived this in her life, and it was a life well lived.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 2 PM Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Wallis-Wilbanks Funeral Home in LaFayette, GA. The Rev. Robert Patterson will officiate.  Interment will follow in LaFayette City Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12 - 2 PM Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.
