Richard Rufus Adkins

Obituary Date: Wednesday, November 29, 2017

Richard Rufus Adkins quietly passed away Wednesday evening, November 29, 2017 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in the Ronnie Green Heart Center after an extended illness.

Mr. Adkins was preceded in death by his wife Margaret “Polly” Westmoreland Adkins; father Luther “Dad” Lee Adkins; mother Lena Anne Adkins; sisters Inez Howard, Edna Nalley, Nola Mae Wofford; and brothers Buddy, Cliff, Phil, and Harlan Adkins.

He is survived by his son Glen R. Adkins and countless numbers of loving family members that range from Kentucky and South Carolina to most settling in North Georgia.

Born and raised in Helen, Georgia, he entered the U.S. Army during World War II and served under the command of General George S. Patton. A ‘Purple Heart’ recipient, he engaged battles and campaigns to include Central Europe, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and the Ardennes. When he spoke of that war, he declared that the real heroes were the men and women that did not come back. Here in Gainesville, Georgia, Mr. Adkins was retired after working as a radio/tv repairman by day and movie theater projectionist at night for over 40 years. His only hobbies were his work and family.

A wonderful and generous man, his son grew up watching him leave after working all day and half the night to serve a poor soul without a working television or radio. He simply said it was the right thing to do.

A heartfelt invitation is extended to all for the Celebration of his Life. Services will be held at 11:00am on December 2, 2017 at Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. David Lewis and Rev. Bob Primm will be officiating.

To further acknowledge the following that provided so much comfort, professional world class care. The doctors, nurses, techs and staff members comprised of critical, intensive and palliative care. Thank you.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Nacoochee Presbyterian Church, PO Box 87, Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia 30571, or online at http://nacoocheepresbyterian.org/.
