Elizabeth “Bettie” Ross

Elizabeth “Bettie” Ross passed away November 8, 2017 in Gainesville, GA.

Mrs. Ross was born in Atlanta, GA to Alexander (Alex) and Roxa Edmonds Walker Vallance in 1917.  She lived in Austin, TX as a young girl and graduated from Austin High School.  She graduated magma cum laude from the University of Texas in 1938 with a degree in biology and chemistry.  While at Texas she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa academic honorary, vice president of the Women Students Association, Mortar Board, Gamma Phi Beta, and was a Bluebonnet Belle.

She was married to James Erwin “Bo” Ross (deceased) for 65 years.  Mrs. Ross lived in Lake Jackson, Texas from 1947 to 2009.  She taught chemistry and biology for 19 years in both Brazosport and Brazoswood High Schools.  She was a long time Girl Scout Leader, served on the Texas Hospital Auxiliary State Board, volunteered in local activities and as a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lake Jackson.  While she lived in Dahlonega and Gainesville, she taught knitting and enjoyed the fellowship of the United Methodist Women’s group.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Richard and Sharon Ross of Austin, TX and Ashville, NC; daughter and son-in-law Dr. Thomas and Sheila Richardson of Dahlonega and Gainesville, GA; granddaughters Dr. Jan Singletary of Dahlonega, GA, Jamie Ross Hayes and Kelly Ross Bolln, both of Charlotte, NC; grandson Jim Richardson of Cosby TN; and great grandchildren Sarah Elizabeth DeBlois of Dahlonega, Parker Hayes and Ryan and Grayson Bolln, all of Charlotte, NC and special friends Barbara Clemons and Jess and Ann Bain.  She was predeceased by her brother James Vallance and a great grand daughter, Hannah Grace Bolln.
