Steven Douglas Adams

Steven Douglas Adams, age 65, died on Thursday October 26 at his home in Buford, Georgia.

Steve was born on September 7, 1952 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Adams Jr., mother, Janet Elizabeth Trimpe (Farnsworth), and younger brother, Guy Adams.

Steve is survived by his wife, Elke, daughter, Malinda Bailey, and grandsons, Austin Edwin Adams and Nathan Bailey. His family includes his brother, Dave Adams and sister, Leslie Kennedy. His nieces are Angie Yemma and Ashley Adams. His nephews are Kyle Richardson and Nathan Adams. His step-siblings are Mike Horton and Sherry Horton De Hart.

Steve attended Western Hills High School and joined the U.S. Army in 1970. He was stationed in Germany and that is where he met his wife, Elke, and Malinda was born. He was discharged in 1972.

In 1974, Steve and family moved to Georgia to work as a car mechanic in various shops over the years. He enjoyed drag racing cars.

In the 1980s, Steve joined American Legion Post 127 in Buford, Georgia; Post 127 was formed in 1926. Steve has been elected as Commander for the last 22 years. With his father, Edwin Adams Jr. at his side, Steve was instrumental in leading the post to being one of the largest in Georgia.  For example, Post 127 had 267 members when Steve first became Commander and now there are 1318 members.

Steve received District Legionnaire of the Year award and the Department Legionnaire of the Year award as well. He has served as Department Sgt. at Arms for 20 years. He was responsible for escorting visiting distinguished guests to the American Legion Department of Georgia. Under Steve’s guidance, the post provided hospitality and he would never turn a needy veteran away, even if it meant it came from his own pocket. He was always ready to provide for the community to ensure the needy had a great meal during the holidays.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 30, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Rev. David Pruitt officiating. Interment will be at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA with military honors. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Buford American Legion Post 127, P. O. Box 377, Buford, GA 30515 in memory of Steven D. Adams.
