William A. Smith, better known as "Pete" passed away Friday October 27, 2017 at his residence from an extended illness. He was born March 5, 1924 to Mack Allen Smith and Rowena Floyd Smith in Jackson County. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of almost 71 years, Juanita Winters Smith, sisters, Carolyn Adams, Kathleen Davidson, Hilda Hill, brother, Horace Smith.
To this union was born 5 children, Brenda (Ronald) Brown of Talmo, Linda (Danny) Crane of Pendergrass, Pat Venema of Woodstock, Keith Smith of the home and Kem (Misty) Smith of Gillsville. He was especially proud of his 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Surviving brothers are Jim (Gwen) Smith, Charles (Bootsie) Smith, and one sister, Bobbie (Wesley) Reece and one sister-in-law, Mary (Horace) Smith. To the Smith clan were many, many other family members too numerous to write but cherished by Daddy.
Daddy was a proud World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy as a gunner in the ship U.S.S. Atherton which is still in commission in the Philippines. He was a charter member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, saved as a young boy and ordained as a deacon for many years. He was retired from Chicopee Manufacturing Company and Hall County Solid Waste, where he worked at the Candler Compactor site.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday October 30, 2017 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Clack Stubbs and Rev. Mark Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Baptist Church with military honors. The family will receive friends at Little & Davenport Funeral Home Sunday October 29 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.
