Dennis Alexander

Obituary Date: Friday, October 6, 2017

Dennis Alexander passed away October 6th 2017 at his rural home in the northeast Georgia mountains.  Dennis was born in the Harvey Hospital on March 27, 1938 to John and Hertha Alexander of rural Martin, ND.  He attended a one room schoolhouse in Berlin Township through the 8th grade and then transitioned to Harvey High School, graduating in 1955.  He attended North Dakota State University for two years and returned home to help his parents farm. He married Delores Newman from Fessenden, ND on October 12, 1963.  Together they worked on the family farm until retiring in 2008.  They moved to Sautee, Georgia to be closer to their immediate family.  Dennis was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Harvey, the Sheridan Association, and the Democratic Party.  Dennis served on the Board of Directors of Verendrye Electric for 27 years during which he met with then ND Congressman Byron Dorgan, Senator Quentin Burdick in a pilot meeting for biofuel alternatives.  In 1975, he was the recipient of the Agricultural Award from North Dakota State University Alumni Association, honored during the NDSU football game. He enjoyed playing trumpet with the Harvey Clown Band, and was an avid fan of the Harvey Hornets and the NDSU Bison.  He and his wife spent their retirement years by traveling abroad to Europe and enjoying the Appalachians.  He valued hard work, honesty, and intellectual pursuits and instilled these values in his children.  He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters Darlene Hennessy and Eunice (infant).  His survivors include his wife, Delores, his daughters, Carmen Eilertson and husband, Brian and grandson Bodie (Lawrenceville, GA), Leslie Stoner and husband, Chris (Suwanee, GA), and brother-in-law Leo Hennessy (Minot, ND). In lieu of his battle with esophageal cancer, the family would prefer memorials to be made to the American Cancer Society, https://www.cancer.org.  A memorial service has been scheduled for October 28th at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Alexander Funeral Home in Cleveland, Georgia.
