Suzanne Preston Williams, 57 of Gainesville passed away Friday, October 6, 2017. One day later, Saturday, October 7, 2017, her mother Carolyn Williams, 83 of Gainesville passed away.
Suzanne was born on March 7, 1960 to Carolyn and Dick Williams at Piedmont Hospital. She attended E. Rivers Elementary School and was a 1978 graduate of Pace Academy. She received a B.A. in Political Science at the University of Georgia where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi.
Suzanne served as Legislative Assistant to The Honorable Ed Jenkins, U.S .House of Representatives from 1984-1989 in Washington, D.C. ad returned to Atlanta to become Senior Vice President for Legislative and Political Affairs for The Home Builders Association of Georgia. Suzanne earned numerous awards during this time including 2005 Lobbyist of the Year and was named 2010 Top Five Female Lobbyists by JAMES Magazine.
Carolyn was born on November 12, 1933 in Atlanta, GA to J. Will and Lucille Williams. She attended E. Rivers Elementary School and was a graduate of North Fulton High School. She Graduated from the University of Georgia with an A.B. in Journalism and was a member of Tri Delta Sorority.
Carolyn married Richard B. Williams, her high school sweetheart on October 8, 1955 at The Cathedral of St. Philip. Carolyn worked full-time while raising 4 children at the family owned Cox Carlton Hotel in Atlanta and is now Hotel Indigo in Midtown. She served numerous years on the Altar Guild and Episcopal Church Women and later was employed by North Georgia College and State University.
Suzanne and Carolyn are preceded in death by parents/grandparents J. Will and Lucille Williams; father/ husband Dick Williams; brother/son Matthew Williams and Carolyn’s sister, Betty Yon Hull.
They are survived by sister/daughter, Lisa Williams Shunnarah, her husband Rick and niece/granddaughter Rachel of Sandy Springs, GA as well as brother/son Andrew Williams, his wife Allison, nephew/grandson Alexander of Charleston, SC and niece/granddaughter Olivia of Hilton Head, SC.
Joint Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday October 24, 2017 at Grace Episcopal Church, 422 Brenau Avenue, Gainesville, GA 30501.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church, or any animal rescue organization of your choice.
