Edith Cavell Hawkins Griffin, age 90, of Gillsville passed away Monday, September 25, 2017 in her home after an extended illness.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Dunagan Chapel located at 5540 Timber Ridge Road, Gainesville, Georgia, 30507. The service will be officiated by Rev. Monsignor Jaime Barona. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and family from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017 at Ward’s Funeral Home located at 758 Main Street, S.W., Gainesville, Georgia, 30501.
Mrs. Griffin was born July 20, 1927 in Tampa, Florida to the late Will Dewey Hawkins and Celine Marie Butcher. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Franklin Royce Griffin, Jr. A member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, she taught Sunday School there for more
than 20 years. She was an avid family historian and genealogist whoauthored a book on the genealogy of the Randolph, Hawkins and relatedfamilies and was cited as a source in other publications.
Mrs. Griffin is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Kathy) Griffin of Cambridge, MA; son, Franklin Royce Griffin, III. of Gillsville;
daughter Mary Elizabeth Griffin and son-in-law Richard Cameron of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and daughter Sarah (Sally) Griffin and son-in-law
Christos Nicolaou of Gillsville; grandchildren, Georgianna Griffin West, Edith (Edie) Ismene Nicolaou-Griffin, Loucas (Louie)
Nicolaou-Griffin and 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Celine (Pinkie) O’Donnell; brother Hugh (Mac) MacDonald
(Joan); brother Christopher (Kit) MacDonald (Suzanne) and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bradley and Mary Lee Griffin as well
as nieces and nephews.

Highfield who provided faithful friendship and attention to Edith’s spiritual needs and to Antonia (Toni) Hernandez for her compassionate
and loving care of Edith.
