Mr. James R. (Jim) Dorough, age 73, passed away Thursday morning at his home in Cumming, Georgia.
Jim was born August 31, 1943 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to the late James R., Sr. and Ann Berryman Dorough.
He served in the U.S. Army, and after graduating from the University of Alabama, Jim began a career path in Sales and Marketing, and held management positions with both Deering Milliken and GAF corporations. These positions took his family to Boston and New York. Later moves brought his family to Gwinnett County and Jim's career transitioned to homebuilding and eventually to residential development.
Jim loved Gwinnett and was an extremely active fixture in the community, and was involved in many philanthropic efforts. He was active in the Atlanta Homebuilder's Association, the 1818 Club, and the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce-where he proudly served on the Board of Directors.
Jim loved traveling and cherished his European adventures with his wife, Paula. He was also an avid golfer and gin player and treasured his time with family and friends at The River Club (Suwanee), Cuscowilla (Eatonton) and St. Ives (Duluth).
Jim retired to Forsyth County where he was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit.
He now resided in heaven, surrounded by loved ones who went before him, and in the loving arms of God who blessed him here on Earth. He was tremendous friend, a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him so dearly. In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his brother, Samuel Dorough, of Tuscaloosa, AL.
He is survived by his adored wife of 51 years, Paula Bolton Dorough, daughters, Leslie Downs, (Robert) and Susanna Lloyd (Wayne), and grandchildren Alex, Caroline, Casey, and Nathan. He is also survived by his sister Mary Frances (Murray) Beiser (Buckhead, GA), brother Joseph Dorough (Tuscaloosa, AL), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, with the Reverend Keith Oglesby officiating.
