Don Talmadge Barnes, Sr.

Don Talmadge Barnes Sr., age 94 passed away peacefully on August 14, 2017 at The Oaks of Hampton in Dawsonville, GA

A remembrance of his life will be held at Lakewood Baptist Church in Gainesville, GA., on Aug. 18, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., with Dr. Tom Smiley officiating.  An interment will follow the service at Memorial Park Cemetery, 2030 Memorial Park Rd., Gainesville, GA  30504.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 6-8 p.m.

Mr. Barnes was born on Feb. 5, 1923, in Charleston, SC while his family was stationed in Fort Sumpter Charleston, SC.  At the age of 5, Mr. Barnes’s family moved to Dawsonville, GA where he lived attended school and worked until joining the US Army in 1942 during World War II.  After returning to the states Mr. Barnes was a business man in the automotive industry for 40+ years.  He was a Lifetime Deacon at Lakewood Baptist Church, Gainesville, GA. He taught Adult Sunday School for 65 years, was a Mason and Shriner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David Glenn Barnes Sr. and Lola Isora Matthews, his brother David G. Barnes Jr. and sister Alma Barnes Fields and great granddaughter Madeline Hope Cox. 

Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife of 71 years, Maxine Bruce Barnes, his son Don T. Barnes Jr. and daughter in law Elizabeth Norment Barnes, his granddaughter Amanda Barnes Cox and her husband Lt. Col. William Cox and three great grandchildren, Conner Cox, Lucy Cox, and Owen Cox.

After Graduation from Dawsonville High School, Mr. Barnes joined the US Army and entered World War II. He served from June 1942 through October 1946 in the IX Engineer Command, 832 Division EAB he went ashore on D Day +4.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in honor of Don Talmadge Barnes Sr. to Lakewood Baptist Church of Gainesville, GA.
