Richard Julius Fribus, age 98, passed away on Thursday at his home in Buford, Georgia. He was born on January 28, 1919 in Union City, New Jersey. His parents were Richard Alfred and Sophie Fribus.
The family relocated to North Bergen when Richard was in High School. He graduated from Emerson High School in Union City,loved sports, especially basketball and baseball. He also enjoyed music and taught himself to play the trumpet and later on the guitar, piano, organ and keyboard.
Richard was employed at the Continental Can Company in New York City. Several employees at the Company formed a choir and he enjoyed singing with them. At special times of the year they would sing in Grand Central Station and other places in the City.
In 1955, the family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Richard loved living in Florida, going to the beach and got involved in running 10Ks. He won many medals and trophies and ran until he was in his 90's. He also played tennis for many, many years and never missed watching a match when Chris Evert was playing. Richard continued to play his guitar and he and a friend along with his nephew formed a trio and played in many places in the area. He loved to sing and in his 90's had a very strong voice and entertained everyone wherever he was.
When his sister moved to North Georgia in 2004 he visited her and soon after decided to move there. He made many new friends and played his guitar and the keyboard and entertained his neighbors in the over 55 community that he moved to.
He is survived by his sister, Dolores O'Hara; nephew, Rick O'Hara (Polly); niece, Carol Lieb (Paul) and children, Cal, Jason and Brent; nephew, Walter Flohr and children, Michael and Jennifer; Alan (Rachael) and children, Eleanor Crooke (Tom) and children, Renee Giangiobbe (Michael), and children, Rachael Lessard (Jim);and children; Regina Rosenbllum (Chuck)and children; Carl Ranfanelli (Anke) and children.
Preceded in death are his parents Richard Alfred and Sophie Fribus, sister Eleanor Flohr McKeon; brother-in-law, Charles O'Hara.
A memorial service will be held at the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kathie Stasko officiating. Visitation will be at 3:30 p.m. and the service will be at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2017.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cumming First United Methodist Church Dementia/Alzheimers Support Group.
