Mrs. Ruby Benton Stowe Luther entered the presence of her Savior on August 5, 2017. Born on February 18, 1932 in Landrum, SC, she was the daughter of Willie Ellis and Mary Elizabeth Pettit Johnson. She spent most of her life in Stephens County, GA.
She was employed by Belk for 27 years in the Boys and Mens Departments, and was later employed by Arbys of Toccoa for 5 years. She was a founding member of Liberty Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, was involved in the Ladies Fellowship and Visitation Ministry, and was on the church’s team that taught the After-School Good News Club at Liberty Elementary. She was loved by all the many children she taught over the years. She was an important part of the Woodlawn Bread Ministry for 14 years, and she helped host Sunday dinners at the Grubers’ home for almost 20 years where she offered local college students a tasty dish, a listening ear, and encouragement and prayer support. Though she never had children of her own, she had many ‘children’ and ‘grandchildren’ around the world. She never met a stranger and loved to tell people about her Savior. A woman of compassion and kindness, the phrase most often heard from her lips was, “You are such a blessing!”
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Alda Allen, husband, Lloyd Benton, husband, Lalon Stowe, and husband, Horace Luther.
She is survived by two sisters, Ruth Norman of Gaffany, SC, and Mary Drewery of Shelby, NC, an adopted grandson, Christopher Vinton of Orlando, FL, a niece, Melinda Price of Cowpens, SC, as well as a number of other nieces and nephews.
In her last years, she was lovingly cared for at her home by a team of caregivers led by Chastity Pitts.
