SIDNEY R. STEELE

Obituary Date: Friday, July 7, 2017

STEELE, SIDNEY R., DBA, COL (RET. USA), age 88, died peacefully on July 7, 2017 at Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville, GA. Steele was a native of Sparta, Wisconsin, and a graduate of West Point, NY.  He served in Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, and multiple US posts in his 24 years in the US Army.  Subsequently, he earned a doctorate in Urban Planning at George Washington University.  Dr. Steele became the Director of Urban Planning for Fairfax County, Virginia.  His next post-retirement endeavor was as a planner/builder of office parks for Sequoia Building Corporation for which national accolades were received.  Finally, Steele founded a corporate foundation (DATA) which was comprised of multiple public and private businesses and government entities to improve transportation in the Dulles International Airport area.  Steele was intricately involved in the planning of the rail system to Dulles Airport from Washington, DC and the expansion of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge between Virginia and Maryland.  Additionally, he dedicated his life to the service of others in light of his deep Christian faith.

Sid and M. Jeanne “Jeanie” Dupuis Steele were married 66 years, and first dated 71 years ago.  Steele is survived by his wife, Jeanie, and four children:  Peg Raposo (Ray), Miami, FL, Bob Steele (Linda), Oakton, VA, Rev. John Steele, CSC, LaGrange, IN, and Jenn Gooby (Philippe), Dahlonega, GA.  Two children, Priscilla Mary and Joseph, pre-deceased their father.  He is also survived by 7 grandsons: Ryan and Brad Raposo, Tyler, Matt, and Jake Steele, and Nathan and Jon Gooby. 

The Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 2PM at the Lanier Village Estates Chapel, 4000 Village View Dr., Gainesville, GA 30506.  An additional Memorial Service will be held at West Point, NY, with military honors.  Date to be determined.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pruitt Hospice, 700 S.
