Betty Joyce Walker Cox

Obituary Date: Saturday, July 8, 2017

Betty Joyce Walker Cox, 80, of Hoschton, GA went to be with her Savior on July 8th, 2017.

Mrs. Cox was born in Greenville, SC on April 21, 1937 to James Blain and Velma Garrett Walker.  She was their only child. She grew up in Greenville with a brief time in Wilmington, DE during WWII when her father and grandfather worked in the shipyards as part of the war effort.  She started school there, but her alma mater was Welcome High School in Greenville, SC where she was the salutatorian and spoke at her graduation.  She met Billy Dean Cox at church and they married on June 2, 1957 while he was stationed at Donaldson AFB in Greenville.  The two of them moved around the Southeast establishing his career with Burroughs Corporation.  They lived in Greenville and Spartanburg, SC, Marietta, GA, Asheville, NC, Oakwood, GA, St. Petersburg and Gulf Breeze, FL over the first 22 years of their marriage. They welcomed two children during those years – Deana Joyce and James Nathan.  In 1979, Billy and Betty settled back in his hometown of Morristown, TN. They lived there for 35 years and were active in many church and charity organizations as well as Amateur Radio Clubs.  They enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel RV and using their timeshare vacations.  After 56 years of marriage, Billy’s death prompted Betty to move to Hoschton, GA to live with her daughter in 2014.

Betty devoted her life to her family and home.  She was a great prayer warrior to all family and friends.  Love for the Lord motivated her daily life and she was one of the kindest people you would ever meet.  She and Billy were a team and she was by his side as he battled many illnesses and she cared for him at home for five years even after he was no longer ambulatory.

Betty is survived by her children, Deana (Kirk) Triemer and Jim (Chrysta) Cox; grandchildren Courtney (Jim) Darling, Garrett Cox, Lyndsey Cox, Katherinne Cambre, and Ethan Cox; one great granddaughter, Molly Darling, and many dear family members and friends.  She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Billy Dean Cox and her parents James Blain and Velma Garrett Walker.
