Nancy (Roeca) Austin, 95, passed away peacefully in her carriage home at Lanier Village Estates on Tuesday, June 27, 2017.
Nancy was born in Independence, MO on April 9, 1922. In her childhood, Nancy lived in Tampa, FL, Atlanta, GA and Washington, DC, as well as in Independence.
She married the late George A. Austin, a career Army officer, and together they lived in Washington, D.C.; Iowa City, IA; Manila, P.I.; Guatemala City, Guatemala; Tripoli, Libya; Okinawa, Japan; Columbus, GA; Atlanta, GA; Lake Toxaway, NC; and Gainesville, GA.
She was a graduate of Western High School and Strayer Business College in Washington, DC. When Nancy and George were living in Guatemala, she studied at San Carlos University.
Her career outside of being a wife and homemaker was working as a secretary. Nancy was Executive Secretary at the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, DC. She was Secretary to the Commanding General on the Philippine Islands, and she was the Secretary in Averell Harriman’s office in the White House.
Beyond these vocations Nancy’s interests and hobbies included bridge, painting, sewing, and reading. She was avid bridge-player at Lanier Village Estates, Gainesville, GA, her home since 2001.
Graveside services for Nancy will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017, at Georgia National Cemetery in Cherokee County near Canton (where George was interred with military honors on June 4, 2010). After the interment, there will be an Open House Reception from 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Nancy’s carriage home at 3773 Valley Hall Lane?.
