Robert Simmie Miller, Jr., age 73 of Gainesville, passed away on June 8, 2017 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center surrounded by family and friends due to complications from acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Simmie was born on June 9, 1943 in Gainesville, Georgia to the late Mr. Robert S. Miller, Sr. and the late Mrs. Ruth Miller. Simmie was a generational member of First Baptist Church and was baptized August 9, 1953. He was a graduate of Gainesville High School, where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He received a basketball scholarship to Truett McConnell College. Simmie was a certified USDA inspector and began his career with Seymour Foods. He played baseball for the Jesse Jewell, Inc. championship baseball team and he coached American Legion baseball. Simmie was employed by Tribe Transport, Inc. as Director of Cherokee National. Simmie was an avid golfer for many years. Simmie even had his own website, www.thesimmiegame.com.
Simmie is and will always be the love of Betty’s life. He will always hold a special place in her heart. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was the most loving and honest man. He was everything to his family and to anyone who was lucky enough to know him.
Simmie was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Betty Locke Miller; daughters and son-in-laws Michelle and Jesse Carter, Tammy and Warren Roper; daughter Cindy Humphries; grandchildren Jesse Allen Carter, Jr., Justin Smith and Cody Smith all of Gainesville; special pet Isabella, his dachshund; and friend Mary Nuttall. Simmie is also survived by all the members of the Simmie Game.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:30pm on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel. Interment will follow in Alta Vista Cemetery. The family has chosen Pastor Wayne Hicks and Associate Pastor Bobby Griffin to officiate the service honoring our Savior in memory of Simmie due to their faithful service, time spent with him and unconditional love shown to him and his family during his brief illness. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the funeral home.
