John Hugh Cavender

Obituary Date: Sunday, June 4, 2017

John Hugh Cavender passed away peacefully on June 4, 2017 at the age of 80. He was in his residence in Dahlonega, GA. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

He was born on December 13, 1936 in Millwood, GA to Clara and Ira Cavender. He was graduated from Waycross High School in 1955 and went on to continue his studies at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, where he was a member of the corps of cadets.

Upon graduation in 1959, John was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army and began an 11-year career in service to his country. He was a 101st Airborne Ranger and served three tours in Vietnam, earning the Silver Star and Bronze Star. He left the Army in 1970 at the rank of Major.

He worked many years for Genuine Parts Company (NAPA) in various management positions. Later in life, he moved back to Dahlonega where he sold real estate and spent time as a Ridge Runner for the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club. He was active in the Rotary Club.

John was preceded in death by his son Matthew. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Cavender of Dahlonega, and his three daughters, Lisa Cavender Wofford (Randall) of Milton, GA, Susan Cavender Nicklas (Kelly) of Mandeville, LA, and Amy Cavender Carney (Robert) of Pataskala, OH ; and step daughter and son in law  Lara and Jon Eddleman of John’s Creek, GA; stepson Michael Andrews of New York City, NY   . John is also survived by his ten grandchildren, Adam and Casey Wofford, John, Christopher, Kathleen and Matthew Nicklas, and Thomas and Luke Carney, Madison & Davis Eddleman ;as well as his sister, Carolyn Dell of Georgetown, KY.

Family will receive friends on Friday June 9th,2017 from 5-9pm at Dahlonega Funeral Home.  Interment will be on Monday June 12th, 2017 at 2:30 pm at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.  Military honors will be provided.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Memory of John Cavender to either the Lewy Body Dementia Association (lbda.org) or the University of North Georgia Foundation (unggive.org).
