Rev. Fred E. Smith, age 90 of Demorest, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
Born in Habersham County, Georgia on October 20, 1926 to the late John Elphus and Sallie Elizabeth Boling Smith. Rev. Smith was an ordained minister who previously pastored New Hope Baptist Church. He retired as a parts manager from Lockheed Martin and proudly served his county in the United States Navy during World War II. He lived his life in the manner we are instructed to do, witnessing to others, and sharing Jesus. Rev. Smith enjoyed rock collecting and gardening. He was a member at Double Springs Baptist Church and the Cornelia Masonic Lodge #92 F. & A.M.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mamie Eliza Tench Smith; sons, Julian Archie Smith and Bruce Fred Smith; grandson, James Michael Dyer, Jr.; brothers, Clarence McFarland Smith, Joe Wallace Smith, George Washington Smith, Tom Watson Smith and John Ferd Smith; sisters, Mary Parthenia Herrin, Ruby McConnell Scroggs and Elizabeth Purcell. Rev. Smith was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Veronica & Kenneth Wood of Cornelia; grandchildren, Kathy Maney, Brian Dyer and Rev. Stephen & Rebecca Smith; great grandchildren, Macy Maney and Griffin Maney; great-great grandchild, Landon Sosebee.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 pm, Sunday, April 30, 2017 from the Chapel of McGaee-Griffin and Stewart with Rev. Chris York and Rev. Stephen Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Smith Family Cemetery with military honors provided by the Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720, the Habersham County American Legion Post #84, the Rabun County DAV Chapter #15, and the Georgia National Guard.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Saturday at the funeral home.
