“The greatest man you ever knew.” It is with such heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, grandfather and friend, George Bernard “Shorty” Jones on Monday, April 10, 2017. George was born on September 2, 1930 to William Henry and Vassie Ann (Crow) Jones. He was the youngest of nine children and grew up in Clarksville, Georgia.
George enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17, where he served proudly. He met the love of his life, Peggy Ruth Taylor and they were married in Missouri in 1951. The union would last 64 years until Peggy’s passing in 2015. They had two beautiful daughters – Rita Mae and Ruth Ann.
He worked as a lineman for the government from 1957 to 1986. He loved “climbing those poles” and had no fear of heights. Even after retirement he couldn’t stand to not work, so he worked for Kirikos Family Funeral Home as part of the cemetery crew.
George was loved by everyone who knew him. His beautiful smile, ice blue eyes, sense of humor and wise knowledge made him so likable. He was so kind and generous to those he loved, and even to complete strangers stranded on the road. He was a strong man with a strong will that always made you feel safe.
He loved the outdoors. Everything from camping to fishing, being on the water, shooting his guns, or just working on his yard. Being up in the mountains was his “paradise”.
He is survived locally by his sister, Wilene Barron of Clarkesville; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two daughters, Ruth Ann Jones and partner, Chip, and Rita Mae Baca and husband, Randy; grandson, Kristopher George Butner; granddaughter, Sabrina Butner; great-granddaughter, Samantha; numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends; and his beloved dog “Pooky”. Special thanks to Rita Baca for always being there for him. “Miss you already Pa.”
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Celebration Service will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 2:00 P.M. at the Sierra Church of Christ Church with Pastor Danny McKinney officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in George’s memory to the Sierra County Cancer Assistance, HC32 Box 8174, T. or C., NM 87901, 575-740-3971 or to Sierra Vista Hospital Auxiliary, 800 E. 9th St., T. or C., NM 87901.
