Harriett Martin Hulsey, our finest and most loved family member, passed away on
Good Friday, April 14, 2017. Born in Gainesville to Ailene Rollins Martin and
Perry Britton Martin, Harriett extended friendships and nonjudgmental acceptance
to all persons. Harriett accepted Christ as her savior at a young age and was
baptized at the First Baptist Church in the early 1950s. She was a 1957 graduate of
Gainesville High School where she was the drum major of the Gainesville High
School marching band. She was a cheerleader and selected by her senior class as
most popular. Harriett received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics
from the University of Georgia in 1961. She was a member of Phi Mu sorority.
Harriett married her high school sweetheart, Julius “Juke” Hulsey in 1960. She
became director of the YWCA in Athens and taught school in order to put her
husband through law school. She excelled in math and taught algebra at
Gainesville High School. Interior design was her passion and she eventually
established The Brass Key, a home accessory and interior design business
previously located on Thompson Bridge Road. Professionally, she developed
many residential and commercial jobs for clients where her talents could be seen as
far as West Palm Beach, Florida and St. Simons Island, Georgia.
Harriett’s most rewarding work was decorating the lives of her husband and
children with her faith in Jesus Christ, her unconditional love and affirmation of all
who knew her. Harriett dearly loved her home on Lake Rabun which was always
open for gatherings of family and friends for over 32 years. It represented a place
of peace and beauty where she could renew her spirit.
Through the years, Harriett and Juke enjoyed being with their three children,
Havilyn Hulsey Towns (Craig), Hadley Hulsey Duncan, and Britton Stephen
Hulsey (Leah); her sister, Nancy Martin Brewer; and her seven grandchildren:
Forest Britton Towns, Julianna Havilyn Towns, and Marimartin Hamilton Towns,
all of Gainesville; R. Lawson Duncan of Atlanta; and Elizabeth Harriett Duncan,
Maeve Perry Hulsey and Martin Grant Hulsey, all of Murrayville, Georgia.
Harriett is also survived by her niece Erin Brewer Still of Gainesville and a number
of other nieces and nephews as well as many friends who loved and adored her.
The family is particularly grateful to the physicians, nurses, and staff at the
Northeast Georgia Medical Center for the special care and attention provided to
Harriett.
