Howard Allen Emsley, Jr.

Obituary Date: Saturday, April 8, 2017

Howard Allen Emsley, Jr., 76, passed peacefully on April 8th, in the presence of his loving family at home after his valiant battle with cancer.  He leaves his wife of 37 years, Christine (Felerski) Emsley, son Matthew Emsley of Sterling, MA, son Brian Emsley of Grayson, GA, daughter Amanda Harbin of Lilburn, GA, and daughter Jennifer Hicks of Hoschton, GA.; a sister, Marilyn Betts, of Newton, KS; and six grandchildren, Connor, Trevor, Becca, Aaron, Will, and Nathan.

He was born in Worchester, MA on May 27, 1940, to Howard Allen Emsley and Gladys Loader Emsley. He grew up in Grafton, MA.  He graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, then Trinity College in Hartford, CT with his B.S. and M.A. He furthered his education by getting his Specialist degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.  He began his career in education in 1964 at St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville, MD first as a teacher (History and Latin) and then as the Headmaster of the Middle School.  He ran the summer camp at St. Paul’s and coached the boys’ soccer team.  He loved his time there and enjoyed working with the students to help them grow.  In 1980, he moved to Atlanta, GA to start a new career in business.  He opened his own credit reporting agency, Factual Data Reports, and ran the company for 20 years.  He was a generous and caring boss, who valued his employees and treated them like family.  He was grateful to be able to work in a field that helped people find homes for their families.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  He was a quiet man who was generous with his time and money to all those he came into contact with. In his retirement, he loved the game of golf and traveling the world with his wife.  He was an avid reader and was passionate about history.  He had a quick wit and sense of humor that kept his family laughing to the end.  He always put others first and spent his whole life giving back.  He will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at a future date at the Carr Funeral Home in Whitinsville, MA with burial to follow in the family plot at Fairview Cemetery in Grafton, MA.  In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in Howard’s name to the St. Paul’s School, 11152 Falls Road P.O.
