Mrs. Lois Simmons Childers, age 91, of Childers Valley Drive, Toccoa, Ga., passed away Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the home.
A daughter of the late Dewey and Beatrice Pimm Simmons, she was born March 27, 1926 in Leedale, Alberta Canada having lived most of her life in Stephens County, Ga. She was employed by Charles Sheriff for a number of years, was a member at Tugalo Baptist Church where she taught Children’s Sunday School and also prepared and served refreshments at Children’s Bible School. Mrs. Childers survived polio at a very young age, having endured many surgeries as a child. She eventually became a passionate dancer resulting in winning The Arthur Murray Award. She was selected as Mother of The Year in 1973 and was a charter member of The Order of Eastern Star Chapter 294. She was also a gifted artist and skilled gardener. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Childers and son, Charles “Moogy” Childers.
She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Marie and Hollis Gastley of Toccoa and Janie Burel of Dawsonville, Ga., a son, John Childers of Toccoa, five grandchildren, Lisa Taylor, Edy Choate, Thumper Childers, Josh Gastley, and Caleb Gastley, and a great grandchild, Madison Gastley and also several others.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, April 9, 2017, 2:00 PM, at The Hillcrest Chapel of The Acree-Davis Funeral Home with The Reverend Harris Pressley officiating.
The following have been selected to serve as pallbearers, James Elrod, Lisa Taylor, Edy Choate, Josh Gastley, Caleb Gastley, and Madison Gastley.
The family will be at the home on Childers Valley Drive and will receive friends at The Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Saturday from 6 until 9 PM.
