Robert G. “Bob” Vass

Obituary Date: Monday, April 3, 2017

Mr. Robert G. “Bob” Vass, 82, of Gainesville, Ga passed away April 3, 2017 following an extended illness.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Gainesville. Dr. Bill Coates and Rev. Danny Newbern will officiate. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Born on May 4, 1934 in Atlanta, GA he was the son of the late Thomas Dawson Vass and Mary Etta Brown Vass.  Mr. Vass was a graduate of Presbyterian College. Mr. Vass spent 40 years in the police force and correction fields. He was Sheriff of Hall County from 1993 until 2000; he was a Federal Probation officer for the U.S. District Court Northeastern District of Georgia; a Probation officer for the State and Superior Courts of Fulton County. Mr. Vass was a member of First Baptist Church and, in addition, he attended and frequently taught the Anglers Sunday school Class, Lanier Tech Advisory Board, Edmondson-Telford Center for Children, Boy Scouts of America-Board of Director, Georgia Sheriff’s Association, Georgia Peace officers Association, Georgia Board of Corrections, 1996 Olympic Games-Security Task Force. He was instrumental in starting the D.A.R.E. program for Hall County Schools.

In 1995, Mr. Vass was an invited guest of the Hungarian Government for 10 days assisting the country in its efforts to move from communist to western policing. In 1996, Mr. Vass was an invited guest of the Israeli Government for 14 days to study terrorism and prepare for the 1996 Olympic Games in Georgia.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Vass is preceded in death by his sister, Elaine Joyce Francis; nephew, Robert Eugene Broadwell; and stepfather, Eugene Austin Broadwell.

Mr. Vass is survived by his daughters, Vicki Beysiegel of McDonough, Jan Cantrell of Gainesville, Cindy Traylor of Blairsville, Bonni S. Howard of Gainesville; granddaughter, Amanda Leigh Smith; grandson, Matthew Robert Smith all of Gainesville; grandson, Donnie Beysiegel, Jr. of McDonough.
