Paul Eugene McClure, 81 of Dahlonega, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. He was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on September 11, 1935. Paul first attended a one-room school house near Tryon, NC and graduated from Landrum High School (SC). He later received degrees from Berry College, Georgia Southern University, and his PhD from the University of Georgia. He was married to the late Geraldine McClure.
Paul was best known for his time as English professor at University of North Georgia. His later professional years involved studies of Appalachian literature and culture, which fit well with his love for bluegrass music. Paul was also an active member of Yahoola Baptist Church, and involved in local philanthropies, such as Meals-on-Wheels and the Gideons, in the Lumpkin County area.
He was survived by his two sons Nathan (Peggy) of Simpsonville, SC and Mark (Lisa) of Dahlonega, GA; five grandchildren, Nathan (Abby) of Augusta, GA; Anna Beth Miller (Tony) of Columbus, GA;, Sarah Grace (Chris) of Jacksonville Beach, FL; Emily of Athens, GA, and Mary of Dahlonega, GA; and one great grandchild, Calleigh Jane.
Funeral arrangements will be held on Friday March 3, 2017 at 2pm in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Yahoola Baptist Church Cemetery in Dahlonega.
Family will receive friends on Thursday March 2, 2017 from 6pm until 9pm.
