John Harold Platt

Obituary Date: Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Our beloved Uncle Harold, of Gainesville, GA took his last flight January 22, 2017.

Born John Harold Platt in 1919 in Cartersville, GA, he moved to Gainesville in 1936 to enter Gainesville High School his sophomore year graduating from the University of Georgia in 1942. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII, farmed, worked as soil conservationist, was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Optimist Club known there as the Christmas tree man. Among his many charitable interests he supported the Hall County Humane Society, Challenged Child and served on the board of Elachee Science Nature Center funding Platt Exhibit Hall.

Harold is predeceased by his wife Anne Palmour Platt, parents James C. and Bonnie Kate Platt, older brother James Conrad Platt, Jr. and younger sister Louise Platt Bloom. He is survived by his lifelong playmate, regular dinner companion and older sister Elizabeth Platt Johnson plus 8 living nieces and nephews: Bonnie Johnson Fritz, Myra Elizabeth (Meme) Platt Wilder, William Hammond (Skip) Johnson III, Elizabeth Louise Johnson, Katherine Bloom Jassen, Harold Warren (Hal) Platt, John Lansing Bloom, Iris Susan Marie Bloom, one deceased nephew James Conrad (Jim) Platt III and his little black dog Felix.

Next to family, friends and animals, Uncle Harold loved aviation, flying ultra-lights for many years and then earning his private pilot’s certificate at the age of 79 so he could fly his beloved Maule.  His favorite spot was his hangar at Wimpy Airport in Dahlonega from which he spent hours flying, planning to fly, and remembering flights with his friends Tim Moss, John Whidby, and David Seabolt.  Ever an adventurer, his flights with co-pilot Bill took him to many destinations including Canada, Alaska, Washington, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, New York City, Georgia and surrounding states.  He especially enjoyed following his sister Louise on her dinner theater circuit performances.

Uncle Harold’s pleasure was to “make a dream come true” which he did for each of his nieces and nephews and many “great’s” as well.  To all of us, he brought humor, fun, and the charge to “Go ahead and try it!”

Thank you, Uncle Harold.

Love, your family
