Lera Black

Obituary Date: Friday, February 3, 2017

Lera Mae Hooper Black passed away peacefully at her home on February 3, 2017 at the age of 91.  Lera was born in White County, Georgia on March 27, 1925 to the late Grant and Fannie Hooper.

The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Barrett Funeral Home Chapel.  Rev. Edward Hood, Captain Daniel R. Kuelker, U. S. Marine Corp Retired, and Rev. Mike Spence will be officiating.  Visitation will be held at 6 – 8 p.m. at Barrett Funeral Home. The Grandsons will serve as Pall Bearers and the Great Grandsons will serve as Honorary Pall Bearers.  Burial will follow the funeral at Gateway Memorial Gardens.

Lera labored as a textile worker for several years, but decided she wanted to be at home.  It was at that time she became a poultry farmer, earning top grower with Gold Kist on several occasions.  She often referred to her job as “raising chickens” and was good at not only raising chickens, but also cooking them.

Lera was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and daughter-in-law.  She took great care of her mother, husband and mother-in-law in her home until their passing.  Her family was her whole world!  However, her passion was her Savior!  Lera loved to study the Bible.  It was that love for God and His Word that inspired her and Guy to open their home to intimately teach new converts the basic principles of the Bible.  Lera’s loving ability to host was also witnessed by those students when she would serve them pound cake, hot from the oven.  Lera has encouraged many youth, through the years, to grow in grace and the knowledge of God’s Word.   She was a member of the Bethel Temple Congregational Holiness Church where she also served several years as the Ladies’ Bible Class Teacher.   Her influence will live on in the lives of those she has taught.

Lera is preceded in death by her husband, Guy Black; son, Danny Black; sister, Frances Dickerson; brothers, Barney Hooper, Fred Hooper and Paul Hooper.

Lera is lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Fran Black; of Charlotte, NC; by her daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra & Philip Ward of Cleveland, GA; Vickie & Jerry Kesler of Winterville, GA; Karen & Mike Spence of Cleveland, GA; her grandchildren, Shane & Renise Black of Acworth, GA; Laurie Bottoms of Woodstock, GA; Jennifer & Brian Binford of Charlotte, NC; Ryan & Rachel Sparkman of New Jersey; Brian & Melissa Ward of Ila, GA; Donna & Robbie Haynes of Cleveland, GA; Delia & Tim Mathews of Comer, GA; Jennifer & Daniel Kuelker of Beaufort, SC; Jeremy Kesler of Winterville, GA; Jimmy & Traci Spence of Hendersonville, NC; Jennifer & Brad Hendrix of Gladys, VA; her 23 Great Grands and 1 Great-Great Grand; her sister, Betty Parish of Lawrenceville, GA; her brothers and sisters in law, Harold & Lucille Hooper of Cleveland, GA; Thomas & Willie Mae Hooper of Demorest, GA; 9 nieces and 11 nephews and a number of other relatives and close friends.
