Iona Katherine Greenwald

Iona Katherine Greenwald, 83,  of Young Harris, GA passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017. Iona was born in Forsyth County and lived in Alpharetta and Cumming before moving to Young Harris. Iona will  be remembered as a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Her elegance and grace was something to behold. Although a petite woman in stature her giving heart and loving nature were larger than the sun.  With her husband, Glen, she volunteered with the Lady’s Auxiliary of VFW Post 7807 and their Thrift Store in Hiawassee and other community events.  She and her husband loved to travel and experience life; she will now join Glen on their next big adventure in Heaven.  Iona is preceded in death by parents, James and Chesty Hudgins; daughter, Sharon Shirley; brothers, Lee Hudgins, Vernon Hudgins, Leonard Hudgins; sisters, May Jones and Elizabeth Scroggins.

Survivors include her children, Robert (Janice) Shirley of Cumming, Roy (Jackie) Shirley of Woodstock; 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; brother, Bobby (Margaret) Hudgins; sisters, Diane Hudgins, Sherry (Jim) Cooper, Betty (Robert) Dowis,

sisters-in-law, Pat Hudgins and Ruth Hudgins; brother-in-law, Dale (Louisa) Greenwald; step-sons, Bret Greenwald, Jeff (Laura) Greenwald, Ralf (Lisa) Greenwald, Gordon Greenwald, Arthur (Kris) Metzler; step-daughters, Lori (Jay) LeBrun, Trisha Metzler; several nieces, nephews and other relative.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 3, at 2:00 p.m. at the Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Purcell officiating. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday the hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VFW Post 7807, 1329 Sunnyside Rd., Hiawassee, GA 30546 in memory of Iona and Glen Greenwald.
