We sorrowfully announce that Robert H. Green, 78, of Gainesville, passed away on Monday, Jan. 9, 2017. Mr. Green was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher and coach at several high schools in the states of Georgia and Alabama, including Gainesville High School.
Born Robert Hulon Green on Jan. 12, 1938 in Ashland, Ala. as one of ten children to the late John Alton Green and Rosalie Tomlin Green, Mr. Green graduated from Clay County High School and then went to Troy State University on a football scholarship, where he graduated in 1960. He earned his master’s degree at West Georgia College in 1977. He started his teaching and coaching career in 1960 at Carrollton High School then went on to coach and teach at Pickens County High School, West Rome High School, and Gainesville High School, where he retired in 1990, devoting 30 years of his life to Georgia’s student-athletes. He moved to Southside, Ala. where he continued his career at Westbrook Christian School and Donoho Academy in Anniston, Alabama for ten more years before permanently retiring in 2003. During his 40 year career, he was selected as coach of the year numerous times in several sports at both the regional and state levels.
Mr. Green is survived by his wife of 56 years Sandra Davis Green, his daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Rick McAfee of Lawrenceville and his son and daughter-in-law Bert and Joanna Green of Duluth. He leaves six grandchildren: Sandy, Erin, and Carson McAfee and Graham, Grace, and Davis Green. Additionally, he is survived by 5 brothers, Harold Green of Alex City, Windell Green and his wife Estelle of Anniston, Hilton Green of Douglasville, Ga., and Mark Green and his wife Sharon and Rick Green and his wife Diane of Ashland Ala; and four sisters Gail Horn, Barbara Krumm and husband Dave, Brenda Holley of Ashland, and June Lindsay and husband Randy of Lafayette, Ala. He leaves behind a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He will be remembered first and foremost for being a devoted husband of 56 years and father and grandfather. He served selflessly as the primary caregiver for his wife after she had a stroke in 1997 and was always his grandchildren’s #1 fan, whether pulling them on the jet-ski or attending all their sporting events. Additionally, he is remembered by adults throughout the states of Georgia and Alabama for being a good science teacher and coach; in fact, he’s almost always referred to as Coach Green as he impacted the lives of many in a positive way. He even shaved his head one season as promised after the team won the region. He loved sports, especially following UGA and University of Alabama football. He also loved cooking steaks on the grill for anyone, including his teams on occasion. Proud of his pontoon boat, he was always eager to give anyone including his brothers and sisters a boat ride while wearing his Troy State baseball cap. He was a fine example of Christ, serving as a man of faith, belonging to First Baptist Church in Gainesville and serving as a deacon at West Rome Baptist during his years in Rome. He proudly led many Fellowship of Christian Athlete groups for his players during his teaching years. Last, Coach Green always loved a good laugh, famously telling even the corniest jokes over and over. He will be deeply missed by his family as they try to live out his legacy.
Visitation will be 5-7 on Thursday January 12th, Coach Green’s 79th birthday at the funeral home. His Memorial service is Friday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church Chapel of Gainesville. A private family burial will be held at Alta Vista Cemetery.
