Ruth Elizabeth Hooper Loudermilk passed peacefully the morning of December 12th at the age of 93. The seventh child of Oliver and Susie Hooper’s family of 11 children, Ruth lived most of her adult life in the Brookhaven section of Atlanta before returning to Gainesville in 2006. She came home to be near her living siblings Ethel Smith, Micki Hurley, Aubrey and Donald Hooper, her two dozen nieces and nephews, plus dozens of spouses and children that make up the large and loving Hooper family. The elder brothers and sisters grew closer than ever and they, and the family, lovingly cared for Ruth as her health declined over the past few months. Siblings that passed before Ruth include Loy, John, Richard, Aubrey and Edward Hooper, Lorena Cochran, and Annie Belle Gilreath.
Born on April 11, 1923 Ruth was a strong and determined woman who endured the tragedy of losing both of her adult children, Dayle and Dan, in separate car accidents when they were in their mid-twenties, and the loss of her husband “Smoke” Addison Loudermilk in 1986. She deeply mourned her losses but kept her spirits high. The Hooper family will long remember Ruth's strong will and her benevolence toward family and friends.
