Ellen Edith Lackey Sturm, age 91 of Athens, GA died December 4, 2016. Funeral service will be held Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 5:30 PM at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 4:30 – 5:30 PM at the church. Interment will follow on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the Fort Benning Cemetery. Mrs. Sturm was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Earl Claude Sturm, US Army (Ret.). She is survived by her children, Marybeth Arnold, Sand Springs, OK, Barbara Mayer, Athens, GA, Glenn Sturm, Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Carey Weaver, Becky Bushyhead, Kim Green, KC Jenniges, Kara McAlhaney, Beth Sturm, Jay Sturm, Daniel Sturm; Great grandchildren, Holden Weaver, Megan Weaver, Ty Bushyhead, Tala Mae Bushyhead, Mikah Bushyhead, Max Bushyhead, Jena Bushyhead, Logan Jenniges, Lucy Jenniges, Conner Jenniges, Claire Jenniges, Grace Green, Abby Green, Zack Green, Thomas McAlhaney, Wesley McAlhaney, Charlie McAlhaney. Mrs. Sturm was born in Shidler, OK and had lived in the Atlanta area the past 12 years. Edith Sturm served as the first woman elected President of an Optimist Club in Florida when chosen as President of the Cape Coral Optimist Club. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Oklahoma A&M University and was a talented flutist in her younger years. Edith's life was dedicated to her God, her family, and the love of her life, Claude Sturm. Edith was the perfect Army officer's wife, raising the children and supporting Claude and his career for almost 30 years. They were married for 65 years. Well done, good and faithful servant.
