Mrs. Joan Praet, age 91, of Gainesville passed away Sunday, November 20, 2016 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, surrounded by her family.
Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Hopewell Baptist Church. Rev. Gary Wilson will officiate. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Memorial Park South Funeral Home.
Mrs. Praet was born December 6, 1924 to the late Henry Mills & Elizabeth Mildred Golden in Hyde Park Dutchess, New York. She was retired from Lanier Park Hospitals, where she was the Business Office Manager and a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School Teacher. The 10th of 13 children, Mrs. Praet graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1942 and then entered St. Francis School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie, New York. Upon graduation, she worked in Private Nursing, and then joined the United States Army Medical Corp. in 1945. Mrs. Praet was the President of ABWA in East Point, Georgia and in 1972 was the Georgia Mother at League of Family in Washington, D.C. honoring the MIA-POW. She was very proud of being able to volunteer at the Hall County Humane Society
Mrs. Praet is survived by her sons & daughters-in-law, David & Dianne Pate of Gainesville and Kenny & Renae Pate of Gainesville; daughter, Elaine P. Griffin of Oakwood; 4 grandchildren, Tim Griffin, Eric Griffin, Jodie Col?n and Heather & Wes Phillips; 5 great-grandchildren, Dylan Griffin, Madison Phillips, Tre Col?n, Peyton Phillips and Dakota Griffin; half-brother, Henry Golden of Tampa, Florida and several nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Loyd Pate; second husband, John Praet; son, Gary Pate (MIA-KIA – Laos – May 1968, Found 2009).
