David Weinbender died on Sunday, November 6, 2016. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years, Dolores Liss Weinbender in 2013 (married September 30, 1950 in Denver, Colorado); father, Jacob George Weinbender; mother, Maria Elizabeth Koch; brothers Jacob and Alexander; sisters, Amelia Mollie Nuss, Mary Jean Justice, Martha Torson and Lillian Ferguson. He attended Longmont High School in Colorado.
David was born September 22, 1914 in Winnipeg, Canada and moved with his family to Bayard, Nebraska in 1923. April 23, 1942 David was given his U.S. Naturalization papers.
He served from June 17, 1942 to January 6, 1946 in combat in the European Theater of Operations. He was a scout car commander on reconnaissance missions. He was part of a first class fighting unit who helped us defeat a powerful, savage, warlike nation. He was a member of the American Legion Post #307.
David has been a loyal, faithful member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church since its inception in 1975. He served as Sacristan from 1988-2006. He was a Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus.
In September, 2016 we wished David a very Happy 102nd Birthday. He was surrounded by family and friends.
David is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, Judith McGregor or Everett, WA, Cindy and Jim Spencer of Georgia, Pat and Jeff Liss, all of Nebraska, and Jason and Marysue Liss of Colorado, Justin Liss of Nebraska.
The funeral mass will be held Thursday, November 10 at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 3740 Holtzclaw Road, Cumming, Georgia 30041 with the Rev. Father Diosmar Natal, Celebrant, Rev. Father Richard Morrow, Homilist assisted by Monsignor Peter Rau, Rev. Father Frank Richardson, Rev. Father John Conway and Rev. Father Jorge Carranza. A reception will follow in the church's Parish Life Center. Interment, with military honors, will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Sawnee View Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Good Shepherd Catholic Church Building Fund.
