Bobby “Bob” Allen Painter, age 82 of Gainesville, passed away on November 4, 2016. Funeral service will be held on Monday November 7, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Gainesville First United Methodist Church, where he was a longtime member. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday November 6, 2016 from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel.
Bob was born on May 13, 1934 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to the late Samuel Procter Painter and Fay Davis Painter. He graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor’s Degree in textile manufacturing. After living in Spartanburg and Walhalla, SC, Bob moved to Gainesville in 1969. He was a Plant Manager at Chicopee Manufacturing Company in Athens and Gainesville until his retirement. Bob loved Gainesville and loved supporting the community. He served on a number of community service boards including Action Ministries, Board of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Chamber of Commerce, United Way and Rotary. He supported the Northeast Georgia History Center and the Good News Clinic. Bob also served as a Captain in the Army Reserves and loved to travel.
Bob was an avid NASCAR fan and loved going to the races. He was also devoted to his alma mater, Clemson University and helped with fund raising for a Student Success center at the university. He was the Rotary Club of Gainesville’s Man of the Year in 2002, a Paul Harris Fellow and Will Watt Fellow, and he was the president of the rotary club from 1989-1990.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Martha Reeder Painter, father Samuel Procter Painter, mother Fay Davis Painter and sister Patricia Painter Gossett, Spartanburg SC.
He is survived by his daughters Laura Painter Ledford and Judy Painter Mims; son-in-laws Bruce Ledford and Michael Mims; grandchildren Madison Shelbie Ledford, Ryan Kristian Mims and Justin Michael Mims; great-grandson Riley; three nieces Tammy Gossett Graves, Kim Gossett and Amy Gossett Penfield and brother-in-law Houston Gossett
