Robert Percope Mallis

Judge Robert Percope Mallis of Gainesville, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away suddenly on October 31, 2016, after a four-year battle with cancer.  He leaves behind his cherished wife of 46 years Ginger McCuen Mallis, and their three sons:  Hampton & his wife Laurie and their sons Robert and Alston of Atlanta; David & his wife Leigh and their daughters Eve and Sloan of Atlanta; Spears & his wife Janna and their children Lillie and Sam of Gainesville; his sister, Evelyn Mallis Griffin and her daughters Lisa Fiondella and Ellen Sassa; his brother, Alex Mallis, and his wife Linda of Cumming and their sons, Andrew and Nicholas Mallis; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert was born May 17, 1939, in Kingsport, TN, son of Andrew Spears Mallis and Genevieve Moses Mallis and grew up in Savannah, GA, and attended Savannah High School.  He was a graduate of Oglethorpe University and the University of Georgia School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor degree. 

Judge Mallis began his career in private law and practiced in DeKalb County for 20 years.  He is a former president of the DeKalb Bar Association and served as a member of its Board of Trustees.  In 1988 he received the DeKalb Bar Association leadership award.  Judge Mallis was appointed to the Superior Court in 1988 by Governor Joe Frank Harris.  He served as Chief Judge of the DeKalb Superior Court, as well as, Administrative Judge for the 4th Judicial Administrative District.  He was a past member of the Judicial Council of Georgia, the Executive Committee of the Council of Superior Court Judges and a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia.  He was an adjunct professor at Oglethorpe University, teaching Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Business Law.  At retirement in 2005, Judge Mallis was appointed by Governor Purdue to be a Senior Superior Court Judge and he served throughout Georgia.  He was a Civil Mediator with the Georgia Office of Dispute Resolutions.

When living in Dunwoody he was a member of the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church and served as head usher and as a member of the vestry.  He twice served on the Board of Trustees of Holy Innocents Episcopal School as Vice-Chairman and later as Chairman when the decision was made to expand to include high school.  He served on the Board of Marr Addiction Treatment Center and many other nonprofit boards.  He was a member of the Lawyers Club of Atlanta and the Old War Horse Lawyers Club.

A visitation at the residence will be held from 2:00 to 4:00pm on Friday, November4, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, at 2:00pm at Grace Episcopal Church, 422 Brenau Avenue, NE, Gainesville, GA, 30501, followed by a reception at the church.
