Pat was born in Hazlehurst, Georgia on November 4, 1939 to the late Alice Smith and W.T. Byrd, both of Hazlehurst. Her early years were spent in the Hazlehurst area and her family later moved to Macon, Georgia. She graduated high school from Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy in Seymour, Tennessee. After high school Pat moved to Atlanta and spent several years as an employee of Southern Bell Telephone Company. She subsequently joined the Georgia State Department of Education while attending Georgia State University. She met her husband, whom was in the U.S. Army, while serving as a USO hostess. They were married in 1963 shortly after his discharge. Pat continued employment at the Department of Education until the arrival of her first child when she elected to be a stay at home mom. She was active in the raising of her children, serving on the parish Mother’s Club, as a Cub Scout Den mother and in the Parish PTA. She remained in active support of her children while they were in high school and chaired luncheons for the ATO Fraternity at Georgia Tech during many of Tech’s home football games. One variant of the name Patricia means honorable. Pat was a genuine lady filled with honor, inner beauty, grace, compassion, and enormous humility. She was devoted to her faith, her family and her friends. She will be sorely missed by all those who knew her. Pat enjoyed traveling, fine dining and restaurants that hosted teas for her and her “Red Hat Club” friends. Reading a good book, under an umbrella on a sandy beach was one of her greatest pleasures. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Flowery Branch, Georgia. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Peter of Buford; sons, Mark (Susanne) of Alpharetta and Mathew of Buford; five grandchildren, Amanda, Zachary, Samantha, Ryan and Samuel; brother, Gary of Marietta; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was pre-deceased by her parents and a sister, Cheryal.
