Suzanne Smith Crowe

Obituary Date: Thursday, October 20, 2016

Mrs. Suzanne Smith Crowe passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at her residence.

Born in Rome, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Roy Carlton and Emily Sewell Smith.  Suzanne was the last member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling, Mignonne Smith Taylor.  She was formally married to John Crowe.

Suzanne lived in Toccoa all of her life, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and attended Toccoa High School where she was a member of the graduating class of 1960.  She, as did her father, attended Carson Newman College for two years, where she was head majorette of the Carson Newman Band and was lead Eaglette for the dance group that performed at half time at the basketball games.  Transferring to University of Georgia, she majored in Speech Pathology and completed her degree and then attended University of Georgia Graduate School.  After teaching for 15 years, Suzanne attended graduate school at Clemson University where she completed her graduate degree in Counseling.

Her career choices focused on the development of young children, whom she always enjoyed.  She worked with the Head Start Program in 14 counties for 10 years and in the Toccoa and Stephens County School Systems in Speech Pathology, and later as one of the first elementary counselors in Stephens County. She was also a CASA volunteer.

 

Suzanne was active in her community, serving as an active volunteer with the Toccoa Elementary PTO, president of the Junior Woman’s Club, president of the Toccoa Cotillion Club, president of the Elk’s Auxiliary, and later as one of the first women elected into membership of the Elks Lodge # 1820.  Suzanne was an elected member of the Stephens County Board of Education; serving eight years and two years as chairman.

 

Suzanne enjoyed researching her family genealogy and validated the enlistment of 6 family members as Civil War soldiers.  She was also a member of the Toccoa Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution with direct connection to patriots Gabriel Smith, Jr. and Gabriel Smith, Sr. who lived in, what was then, Franklin County, Georgia.

 

She is survived by her two sons, Micheal Crowe and his wife, Kim of Lakemont, Georgia and Richard Crowe and partner Kerry of Fernandina Beach, Florida, The joy of her life was her only grandchild, Elizabeth Crowe, also of Lakemont. 

A Memorial service will be held for Mrs. Crowe on Wednesday, October 26, 2016, 2:00 PM in the Hillcrest Chapel of The Acree-Davis Funeral Home with The Reverend Jim Bocian officiating.

Flowers are to be omitted and memorials be made to Flat Creek Baptist Church 1433 Low Gap Road Lakemont, Georgia 30552.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 12 Noon until the service hour at The Acree-Davis Funeral Home.
