Travis Watts Honeycutt, age 73, Gainesville, GA, a lifelong chemical engineer, inventor and innovator, devoted husband, father and grandfather passed away on September 13, 2016. He leaves behind his beloved wife Maggie of 41 years; his three children, Thomas Honeycutt (Louise) of Woodstown, NJ, Leah Honeycutt Griffith (John) of Summit, NJ and William Honeycutt (Kim) of Chattanooga, TN; nine grandchildren who were the light of his life—Sam, Luke, Kate, Anna, Simeon, Eli, Ellie, Reagan, and Jessie; and three beloved sisters Delores Sammons of NC, Elizabeth Honeycutt of NC and Charlene Stephens of South Carolina. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Edward and Rayford.
Born in Durham, North Carolina, Travis was one of six children of Charles and Frankie Watts Honeycutt. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Fiber and Polymer Chemistry from North Carolina State University and a Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He was honored with a Doctorate degree in Physics from Solomon University in Kiev, Ukraine. He had over one hundred patents to his name and received several awards for entrepreneurial growth and success, including Inc. Magazine’s Entrepreneur of the Year for Healthcare in the Southeast Region, and was inducted into the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Engineering Hall of Fame in 2007. He was the founder of Isolyser Inc. which became a publicly traded company, founder of Climax Global Energy, and founded and served as the Chief Executive Officer of Vystar Corporation until March 2008. Prior to retirement, he had over thirty-five years of experience in new business and technical development in the industrial and healthcare markets.
He was an avid Georgia Tech football fan, NC State Basketball fan, hunter and fisherman, sustained by his abiding faith and delighted in the activities and pursuits of his grandchildren. He will be missed greatly by his family.
Funeral Service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday September 17, 2016 at Chestnut Mountain Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John Batusic and Rev. Kennedy Smartt will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday at Ward's Funeral Home.
