Douglas Sewell Blackstock

Obituary Date: Saturday, September 10, 2016

After walking the Earth for 75 years on September 10, 2016, Douglas Sewell Blackstock went to walk with Jesus.  He was at home with his family after fighting a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.  Sewell was a life long member of Talmo Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, teacher and choir member.

He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Jewell Blackstock and his mother Velva Elizabeth Tanner Blackstock.

He leaves a wife of 56 years, Mary Grace Carruth Blackstock, son and daughter in law, Tommy and Tammy Blackstock, daughter and son in law, Cynthia and Ronnie Williams, daughter and son in law, Susan and Jeff Barkley. Brother and sister in law, Jim and Jan Henderson, Sister and brother in law Sandra and Tracy Gross, grandchildren, Kodi and Orry Mitchell, Kelli and Blake Duck, Charlie Williams, Tanner Williams, McKenna Barkley, Chandler Barkley, Jackson Barkley along with dozens of nieces and nephews.

Sewell was born on the Blackstock Farm on November 7, 1940.  He attended Talmo Elementary School then graduated from Jefferson High School in 1958.  He attended the University of Georgia for two years then, married his high school sweetheart and soul mate.  Sewell worked long hours to support his family.  He worked many years traveling for Paris Dunlap Hardware.  After much time on the road, he returned to his roots and became a fulltime farmer.

Farming bought Sewell both joy and recognition.  He was honored as Hall County Farmer of the Year in 2000.  In 2016, Sewell was inducted into the Hall County Agriculture Hall of Fame.  Sewell served as a District Supervisor for the Hall County Soil & Water Conservation District from 1991-2015.

Sewell loved to serve his community.  He became a dedicated member of Johnny's Hill Masonic Lodge.  He worked hard to see the lodge grow in membership and good deeds.

Sewell loved his Lord, his family, his friends, hunting, fishing, farming, Georgia Bulldogs, laughing and eating ice cream.  His best times were spent with his grandchildren.  Each one was given all the love and attention their Papa could muster.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday September 14, 2016 at the Talmo Baptist Church.  Rev. Charles Jenkins and Rev. Mark Spence will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery with Full Masonic Graveside Rites.  The family will receive friends at Little & Davenport Funeral Home Tuesday September 13 from 4-7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Talmo Baptist Church or Johnny's Hill Masonic Lodge in memory of Sewell.
