George Kennedy Hinton

Mr. George Kennedy Hinton, age 85, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 at his residence.

Born in Columbus, Georgia on July 25, 1931, he was the son of Walter B. Hinton, Sr. and Bessie Kennedy Hinton. George was a graduate of Columbus High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from December, 1950 to October, 1954. He served on the USS Rogers during the Korean Conflict and Formosa (now Taiwan)  Patrol. He was discharged with the rating of Radioman Second Class. George attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus and went on to receive an A.B. Degree from Mercer University in Macon and an M.A. Degree from the University of Georgia. During his career, George was employed by Mercer University, the University of Georgia and Farm Journal Magazine. From 1967 to 1996, he was employed by Middle Georgia College in Cochran where he served in various capacities. He retired as registrar emeritus, director of admissions emeritus and associate professor emeritus of English and Journalism.

George was preceded in death by his brother, Boyd Hinton. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Yvonne Schilling Johnson Hinton and niece; Claire Shepard and her son, Michael Shepard.

A memorial service with military honors will be held Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Greenwald officiating. Inurnment will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 30th at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:30 until 2:00.
