William “Wicky” Loy Loudermilk Sr., age 96 of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016.
Wicky was born July 20, 1920 in Demorest, GA to the late Clarence James Loudermilk and Mandy Cash Loudermilk. He was preceded in death by his sisters Frances Holbrook and Elizabeth Greeman, brothers Sylvester Loudermilk and Clyde Loudermilk, and great granddaughter Sarah Brook Loudermilk.
Wicky graduated from Piedmont College with a Bachelor of Science Degree where he played baseball, basketball, and tennis. He was inducted into the Piedmont Athletic Hall of Fame for baseball and basketball. After graduating Piedmont, Wicky attended the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee where he received a Master of Arts Degree. Upon returning to Georgia, Wicky taught and coached at Clarkesville High School, North Georgia Technical School, Toccoa High School, Nacoochee High School, and White County High School. He retired in 1984, and was inducted into the White County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. Wicky enlisted in the United States Army after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He graduated from the Medical Technician Program at Brooks General Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas as a Surgical Technician. He went on to serve in Scotland, England, Germany, France, and Normandy. Also during his Army service, Wicky boxed and played football and baseball. In 1946, Wicky was honorably discharged from the Army, and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include his wife, Dean Loudermilk, Cleveland; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Hue Rainey, Sautee; Susan and Kent Brittain, Helen; son and daughter-in-law, Bill Loudermilk and Julie Roche, Sautee; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Mat Lockwood, Cleveland; brothers and sisters-in-law, J.C. and Jean Loudermilk, Mt. Airy; Bobby and Willie Loudermilk, Cumming; grandchildren, Chris Hall, Mandy and Nick Nash, Will and Tara Loudermilk, Coley Loudermilk, Clancy Loudermilk, Kathyrn Lockwood, Moira Lockwood; great grandchildren, Savion Hall, Emma Loudermilk, Hadley Loudermilk, Adelaide Loudermilk; brother-in-law, Henry “Red” Holbrook, Mt. Airy; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, July 31, 2016 at The Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Monte Cantrell will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
