Nancy Davis Herrington

Obituary Date: Sunday, July 24, 2016

Nancy Ann Davis Herrington, of Sautee GA, formerly of Savannah, passed away July 24, 2016 in Northeast Georgia Medical Center (following a short illness.) Born in Athens, GA, she was raised in Millen, GA. Predeceased by her mother Ann B Davis, she is survived by her husband John, her only child Jay, his wife Linda, and their two children, Ethan and Ava.

Nancy graduated from Jenkins County High School and from Georgia Southern University. Her career in education spanned 30 years in Chatham County, first at Groves HS, and then Beach HS, where she was a history teacher and coordinator of the school's gifted program. During her years at Beach, Nancy coached many students in the national Close Up project, Model UN, Mock Trial, Social Science Fairs, and was her school's representative in a number of county-level social science related activities. A member of Alpha Delta Kappa, she was a past president of Pilot Club.

Nancy was a loving and loyal relative, acting for years as a caregiver to three of her aunts, her mother, and her mother-in-law, often opening her home as well as her heart to them all.

Married to the love of her life, John Herrington, she spent 49 years as part of a team, (never fighting as he always remembered to say "Yes, Nancy.”) Their love of travel and discovering new places was lifelong, and trips with extended family and friends were planned well in advance, accompanied by labeled bags, parcels, jewelry, and coordinated outfits. A long-time antique dealer since her retirement, Nancy enjoyed uncovering items with a story to tell, and giving them new homes.

Her Facebook page contains many pictures of her two grandchildren, who she considered her special blessings.  She was very proud of her son Jay, and of his lovely wife Linda, who is also a teacher. Her posts also include friendships with many former staff members and students, who remained very dear to her. Nancy was a woman of strong character and conviction, who had an incredible love for her family, friends and animals, all of whom mourn her passing and will eternally miss her presence.

The viewing will be held from 5:30-7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 26th at Barrett Funeral Home in Cleveland, GA, with a service at 7:00 PM.  Interment will take place at the Millen Cemetery in Millen, GA at 2:00 PM Thursday, July 28th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or your local animal shelter.
