Edith Mae Tate Higgins

Obituary Date: Sunday, June 26, 2016

Edith Mae Tate Higgins, 90, of Dahlonega, GA. passed away on June 26th, 2016.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred R. Higgins, in 2002.  She is survived by her daughter, Joyce (Gene) Westmoreland and her son, Kenneth (Alice) Higgins.  She is also survived by six grandchildren: Andrea Coulter, Alex (Jennifer) Menzel, Amber (Matt) Donnett, Ashley (Kadee) Sloan- Westmoreland, Eric (Julia) Higgins, Ben (Amanda) Higgins, fourteen ( soon to be fifteen ) great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.\

Edith was born in Broxton, Georgia to the late Stella Wimpy Tate and John Hubert Tate (Hub).  She had four brothers: Carlton, F.W., Clinton and Ray Tate, and a sister Thelma Tow, all of whom predeceased her.  She spent her early school years in the Coffee County public schools, but moved with two of her brothers to Lumpkin County and finished high school.  After her marriage in 1945 and the birth of her two children, she graduated from Perry Business School in Gainesville.  She was then hired by Louise Riddle, then director of Lumpkin County Welfare Department to be her secretary and soon thereafter became a social worker alongside Mrs. Riddle.  Edith retired after having worked for 30+ years for the then named Department of Family and Children's Services.  She always knew that this was more than a job.  It was her true calling in life-helping and serving others.  She loved her Lord and Savior and knew that she was serving Him as she served others.  This was apparent to many during her final days as she bore her illness with strength, grace, and peace.  It was obvious that she was able to do this because of the assurance she had of the heavenly home that awaited her.

Family will receive friends on Friday July 1st, 2016 from 5pm until 9pm.  Funeral Services will be Saturday July 2, 2016 at 2pm at Siloam Baptist Church in Dahlonega, burial to follow in the church cemetery.  Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made to The Community Helping Place or Siloam Baptist Church.
