Frank L. Downing

Frank L. Downing, honored World War II veteran, devoted husband, cherished father, grandfather and loyal friend to many, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, infectious laugh, generous spirit and signature "Bless your Heart". Anyone he ever met was touched by his kind, gentle soul.

Born in Delina, Tennessee to Adrian Monroe Downing and Nannie Smith, Frank was one of four brothers whose love and friendship lasted a lifetime. He proudly served in the third armored division, Spearhead, in the US Army during World War II. Afterwards he would go on to play basketball and graduate from David Lipscomb University in Nashville. He married Inez Lowe and had five children.  He spent his career as Director of Recreation at the VA Medical Center, first in Nashville and then in Decatur. Frank loved life, sports, the beach, Hooters (the wings), God and especially his family.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Inez Lowe Downing. He leaves behind five children: Nancy Wiley, Larry Downing (Sheila), Mark Downing,  Teresa Bodine (Doug) and Carmen Minyard, nine grandchildren: Erin, Brian, Carrie, Jennifer, Randy, Amanda, Charlie, Kelly and Derrick. 17 great-grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, as well as devoted extended family and countless wonderful friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Gainesville First United Methodist Church, the American Heart Association and the Wounded Warrior Foundation.

Family will receive visitors on Friday, May 20 at Little & Davenport Funeral Home in Gainesville, GA from 5 PM to 8 PM. Funeral services to be held Saturday, May 21 at Medium Methodist Church in Delina, Tennessee.
