Amy Lucille Fleming (Susie) died peacefully on May 17, 2016 at Ashton Senior Living after a brief illness. She was a charter member of Lakewood Baptist Church. Because she was never one for accolades, our family decided to use a biography as her obituary. The biography was written about her by her granddaughter, Holland, when she was in the 3rd grade.
“My grandmother, Susie Fleming, was born in Jackson County, Georgia on June 12, 1925. She moved to Gainesville with her family when she was 2 years old in 1927. She attended grammar school at Main Street Elementary School. (Gainesville only had 2 schools, an elementary school and a high school.) Girls were required to wear dresses and boys were required to wear pants. Some of the games they played were jacks and monopoly. She attended Gainesville Junior High School where she ran track and played basketball in 1938. In 1941 the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and for the next 4 years my grandmother's life revolved around the war. Even the job at Southern Bell that she got in 1942. During the war she did whatever she could to help the soldiers. From sewing to helping out at the Naval or Air bases. After the war was over in 1946 she married Howard Porter Fleming and in 1949-1959 had 3 children. During these years she went to college. In 1966 she became an assistant teacher at a preschool. After about 4 or 5 years she became the director of the Head-Start Program at the preschool and worked there til 1981. The next few years she devoted her time to children and grandchildren. In 1984 my grandfather died, after being married 37 years. My grandmother then started her third job at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. She has now been working there for 11 years. My grandmother has had a very successful life.”
