Captain Mark Barden Haselton Jr.

Captain Mark Barden Haselton Jr. of Alpharetta, Georgia, passed away due to complications from an extended illness on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the age of 75.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Pamela (Looper) Haselton, his three daughters Jennifer Burt (Eugene), Martie Haselton (Jim Wills), and Jodie Niznik (Tim), and his six grandchildren Natalie and Andrew Burt, Georgia and Lachlan Wills, and Taylor and Billie Niznik. He is also survived by his sister Sally Ingham (George), his two nephews James Foster and Jeff Foster (Susie and children Henry and Natalie). He is preceded in death by his parents Mark Haselton Sr. and Marjorie (Brisbine) Kalenius along with his beloved Uncle Bob and Aunt Carol Brisbine and his Aunt Marian Kinseth.

Mark was born on August 9, 1940 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was raised in California and proudly attended Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA where he graduated in 1963 with a degree in Structural Engineering and as the Top Cadet in his ROTC class. Upon graduation, Mark accepted a regular Army Commission and served overseas in Germany from 1963-1966 and then in Vietnam from 1966-1967. He received a silver star for his gallantry in action during the Vietnam War.

After his military career, Mark began his engineering work with Western Concrete. He then decided to start his own company and began Continental Concrete Structures in 1979. Continental became a well-respected and successful firm that built many buildings throughout the country including the 62 story SunTrust Plaza in Atlanta, the 52 story Place St. Charles in New Orleans, the 46 story Southern Bell Building in Atlanta, The Pinnacle Building in Atlanta, The St Regis Hotel in Atlanta, and the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta among many others. Mark retired recently, but still maintained a voice into the well-being of the company.

Mark enjoyed life to the fullest with his beloved wife, Pamela, and their many friends. His life was characterized by his hard work, generous spirit and love for life.  He is greatly missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service celebrating Mark’s life will be held on Friday, April 29 at 2pm at the Big Canoe Chapel in Jasper, Georgia with a reception immediately following at the Big Canoe Clubhouse.
